_MG_4588First Monday of 2012 with minimal wind got the downwind crew off the sea and onto the Century City Canals. 25 brave paddlers, on everything from 8’10 waveboards to 14ft dedicated flatwater race machines, took to the start gun of Mr Rob Munro. Sebastien Cattelan and Gary van Rooyen took off down the first canal whilst pure carnage

followed as the paddlers were going through the narrow gap 3 deep and virtually on top of each other. Pascal from France got a decent start with Pietro in pursuit, but it was Chris Bertish who was on a charge from starting around 12-15th. One by one he picked off the guys in front with PeterP and Brad Adams saying thank you for the tow and following through. With only Gary and Sebastien out front PeterP took over from Chris in an attempt to close the gap on the leading two. Halfway to achieving this Chris had dropped off the tow and Brad had slipped up next to Pascal just pipping him to the line. First junior Matthew van der Linden just got in ahead of first lady Sophie Rotabouilon in respectable sub-14minute times. Canals are pretty low and a fair amount of weed making the canals a wee bit slower than usual. Closing off the field was 5 lady SUPsistas all on 10ft boards or shorter proving that anything goes on the canals and that any board will give you a smile and a workout.
Nest week is FMOTM which means Bring and Braai so get amongst it and enjoy the great warm weather we’ve been having – check NaishSUP facebook page for updates as severe winds will send the pack onto the downwind runs....
