I first visited Madagascar in 99, and have now done 8 or 9 trips over there. Arriving with SUPS and paddles was a first for me, and actually quite exciting. I love Firsts! And this was the first official SUP trip to Madagascar.

According to the legend, millions of years ago Chiloe was attached to the continent. That was until the “Spirit of the Waters” appeared in the body of a snake named Cai-Cai Vilu. This one ordered the rise of the sea level to flood the land and drown its habitants. But then appeared the “Spirit of the Land”, also as a snake, named Ten-Ten Vilu. That’s when a true war begun between both of them, while Cai-Cai Vilu was rising the level of the sea, Ten-Ten Vilu was elevating the lands, both trying to protect whatever existed in their respective domains.

Living in front of South America’s top pointbreak also has its disadvantages. It is common indeed that the most famous spots gets filled with crowd on weekends and holidays. The holy grail becomes a bore: the relationship with the ocean changes, the struggle for position with others begins, there is frustration in the line up, tension…and the basic purpose of being there – having fun - is getting lost.
