Clint's Board Reviews - update E-mail

Original article: Read Here

Hi All,

An update on the article above.

After 3 months of riding the Starboard I stared noticing some flaws...

I think it was more the type of wave I was riding rather than the board itself.

The MAIN and only real concern was the lack of rocker. I got cleaned up a few times in some heavy waves with the nose catching and firstly assumed it was me but then realized that the board has little to no rocker.

I am off to Bali in just over a month for 2 weeks and was planning on surfing some hollow waves and hopefully getting nicely slotted and the lack of rocker on the board concerned me.

I finally tried a Naish 9'6 this week-end in knee high Muizenburg. I remember when I first tried the 9'6 and struggled with the stability, Rob from Naish Africa, told me that the smaller boards are not as "corky" as the 11'6 I was on and once you get used to the rail dropping into the water that stability was no real issue.

After riding a 9'8 for a while know the transition onto the 9'6 was a breeze. It is a touch more wobbly than the starboard (narrower and less volume) but I got the hang of it quickly.

One thing that you CANNOT compare between the boards is they way the Naish surfs !!! I think I mentioned how well they surfed when I first reviewed the board. I was blown away in how well the board surfed in power puff waves and cannot wait to take it into some meaty stuff....

To cut a long story short I was so impressed with the board and had such a great session that I board one the next day...

I cannot wait to get in the water next and am fired up for 2 solid weeks in Bali to really dial into the board and will hopefully get a "Post Bali" review up on the board !

Just thought I would add my updated thoughts/comments...

Off to Gumtree to offload the Starboard Element ...

I have to agree with you on the rocker story, I being 120kgs have recently aquired a Naish 10.0 with plenty of rocker, wow what a board to ride, rides just like my old long board, for me to say this as a crap 43 year old supper, this board must have something special. My supping has gone from zero to OK purely due to the board, once again what a board.

INTERESTING NOTE CLINT. THANKS. On the other hand, I love my 9'3" which has loads of rocker, but it's not an everyday board. I'm finding that it needs a powerful wave that is preferably breaking top to bottom with little to no wind. I think it's good to have a longer more stable board for more longboarding type applications and then the shorter board with the big rocker for more powerful top to bottom surfing. I still rate the 10'6" Nalu as the best all round board out there. It's got length, stability, a decent rocker and good rails for surfing.

howzit clint
did you look at the 2010 starboard converse?
its about the same volume as the naish nine six, but shorter at nine foot. im also on a 2010 element and want a shorter board as well. also around 90kgs.

Hay Anthony,

I never rode the Converse so I cannot comment on it ?

I had a look at the board online and my "personal" preference is a swallow tail as I find it allot more responsive and turns allot easier.

Good luck with the search and sorry I could not help out more...

Cheers

Clint
